- THE GOOD OLD DAYS -

When I first started doing renderings as a side gig, moonlighting for friends of mine who had their own design firms, I really enjoyed doing large format watercolors. These were often 24x36, with pencil linework directly on cold press watercolor paper. With large broad washes in sedimentary paints, they were a direct emulation of the greats: Schaller, Farey, Voysey, Parrish…

By 2000 though, photoshop was creeping in. And when a client wanted to move a tree or change brick colors, it was easier to wrangle things digitally. Soon, most color work was originating in photoshop to begin with, although still by hand, on a Wacom monitor. I did my last large format watercolor in 2009.

I still miss the smell of madder in the morning…
